What is LAO cuisine?

While both Lao and Thai cuisines are beloved for their bold flavors and use of fresh, vibrant ingredients, they each have their own distinct culinary identity.

Lao cuisine is known for its rustic and earthy flavors, with an emphasis on fresh herbs, bold spices, and fermented ingredients. Dishes like lab gai (a spicy minced meat salad), tam mak hoong (Lao-style papaya salad), and khao niew (sticky rice) highlight the use of simple, yet impactful ingredients. Lao food tends to have a more savory, herbal profile, with a strong focus on the balance between heat, tang, and freshness.

On the other hand, Thai cuisine is renowned for its complex, harmonious balance of sweet, salty, sour, and spicy elements. Thai dishes like pad Thai and curry incorporate ingredients like coconut milk, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, which create a layered, aromatic depth of flavor.
